Employee Spotlight:  Jonah Ebenhoeh

Accountfully believes people are greater than numbers, and we are on a mission to prove it.  We enjoy featuring our eclectic employees with a spotlight that shows the world a bit more about them behind the outsourced accounting scenes.

Jonah has been the talk of the firm since he arrived.  It didn’t even take a year of employment before remote Senior Accountant, Jonah Ebenhoeh earned himself one of Accountfully’s top internal awards–the Key Contributor Award.  It’s largely due to the fact that he is intensely helpful to clients and has a work ethic that is matched only by his strong communication skills and genuine, helpful nature.  Enough shameless bragging.  There’s more to Jonah that lies behind the work scenes.

He is a talented Tennis player and pet parent of two dogs and a reptile; a Beagle/Pit Bull mix named Ky, a Chihuahua named Q,  and the wildly popular 21-year-old Leopard Tortoise, Dave.  This old, crotchety Tortoise inspires weekly updates across our internal pet Slack channel.  His tales of botched enclosure escapes and picky eating make for some of the most entertaining stories firm-wide.

Let’s learn more about Jonah and why he’s been making such a splash in the Accountfully scene, all the way from Chesaning, Michigan.

Background on Jonah:

Jonah shares Michigan roots with Accountfully’s CEO and Partner, Brad. Brad and Jonah’s grandfathers were brothers. Brad and Jonah grew up only 12 miles from each other in the Great Lake State. While Brad moved South, Jonah recently moved back to his Michigan hometown after living in Kentucky for eight years.

Where Jonah grew up:

A small, one-stoplight farm town called Chesaning, Michigan. He attended Ferris State University and majored in Professional Tennis Management, which is a Bachelor of Business degree, but is specialized for people who want to pursue a career in the tennis industry.

How Jonah got into Accounting:

I sort of fell into it.  When I was teaching tennis at a country club seasonally, our HR and Payroll person left for a new position.  I told the controller I could help her if she needed it during the off-season and put my business degree and HR certificate to use.  I started by entering invoices and filing payables.  She taught me a lot that winter, then offered me a full-time position the next fall after the tennis season wrapped up.  I saw that as my opportunity to get off the tennis court and jumped on it.

Jonah’s Role at Accountfully:

I am a Staff Accountant with Accountfully on the recurring operations team (on his way to becoming a Senior Accountant).

My favorite part of working at Accountfully is the ability to work remotely and the trust that is given to us to get our work done without being micromanaged.

First job:

Brushing crumbs off of chairs at my grandparent's restaurant while my older cousins ran the vacuums on weekend mornings.  This was an unpaid position but did transition into working just about every position imaginable in the restaurant by the time it closed when I was 16. Fun fact, my mom and Brad’s Grandma used to both do bookkeeping together at my Grandpa's restaurant back in the day, I guess you could say accounting runs in our DNA.

Favorite way to unwind after a busy day:

Taking my dogs on a walk.

Work-related accomplishment Jonah is most proud of:

The United States Tennis Association awarded me "Special Event of the Year" in the state of Kentucky for a fundraising event I put on (with help from my tennis committee) for a few years.

Who is Jonah’s hero:

My Uncle Greg. He was a second father to me and left this world at a young age, but in the 50 years he was with us, the amount of positive impact he had on people's lives is unmatched.  He was everyone's best friend and never had a negative thing to say about anyone.

What makes Jonah laugh the most:

My brother Tom.  He was a successful sketch comedian in Chicago for a long time, but the funniest times are when we are just hanging out and making each other laugh.

Go-to Karaoke song:

I keep a list on my phone that is actively updated, the last count was 35 songs.  But if I had to pick one I would say Dean Martin's "Ain't that a kick in the head"

Where Jonah is going in his time machine:

Probably back to college so I could borrow more responsibly on the student loans that I am still paying back.

Which animal Jonah would be:

Probably an eagle or falcon.  Apex predator and being able to fly would be convenient.
